Year of the Goat 2027: Meaning, Birth Years and Traditions

The Year of the Goat begins on February 6, 2027, and runs through January 25, 2028. It’s the eighth sign of the twelve-year zodiac, and 2027 is a Fire Goat year, the first since 1967. Here’s what the goat stands for, who was born in a goat year, and how Orlando is celebrating.

What is the Year of the Goat?

The lunar zodiac is a twelve-year cycle, with an animal for each year. It comes from China and is shared in different forms across many cultures that celebrate Lunar New Year. The goat comes after the horse and before the monkey. The full order is rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Goat or sheep?

You’ll see this year called the Year of the Goat, the Year of the Sheep and sometimes the Year of the Ram. The Chinese word yáng (羊) covers all three animals, so each translation is fair. Vietnamese tradition uses the goat, and Korea often says sheep. We use goat, and our 2027 mark is a copper goat on a red diamond.

2027 is a Fire Goat year

Each zodiac year also pairs with one of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal or water. Together they form a 60-year cycle, so each pairing comes around once every six decades. The last Fire Goat year was 1967. In Vietnam, 2027 is called Đinh Mùi.

Goat years and birth dates

The zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year rather than January 1, so if you were born in January or early February, check the exact dates.

What the goat stands for

In tradition, the goat is gentle, calm and creative, with a kind heart and a love of peace. Families often talk about the sign’s qualities the way any family shares old stories. At Celebrate Lunar, we share the zodiac as culture and storytelling rather than as a forecast.

How the goat got eighth place

The zodiac’s best-known story is the Great Race, in which the animals crossed a wide river to earn their place in the calendar. In a popular telling, the goat, the monkey and the rooster found a raft and worked together to get across. The goat came in eighth, the monkey ninth and the rooster tenth. It’s a fitting story for a sign known for getting along with others.
